Treating and improving soil before planting vegetables

Treating and improving soil is necessary work  before growing vegetables

1. How to mix soil and treat soil before planting vegetables

1.1 Purpose of soil treatment before growing vegetables

– Treat all pathogens in the soil

– Increases soil porosity and humus, helping the soil retain moisture well and drain quickly

– Create clean soil for growing vegetables, full of nutrients for plants

– Rebalance the nutrients in the soil, consider compatibility with vegetables grown in trays, pots, and foam containers

1.2 Choosing the type of soil for growing vegetables

There are many types of soil we can use to grow vegetables such as: loam soil, sandy soil, sandy soil, alluvial soil. Many companies sell vegetable growing soil that is popular with many people today such as: coconut fiber soil, smoked rice husk soil, clean tribat soil, alluvial soil… However, if you directly use purchased land for planting, it does not meet the soil standards for growing vegetables. Thus, vegetables will grow slowly and be susceptible to many pests and diseases. That’s why we have to treat the soil before growing vegetables.

Standards of soil for growing vegetables

– The soil is clean of disease sources (fungi, root-damaging nematodes…)

– Good drainage, retains moisture for a long time

– High porosity and humus content

– Full of nutrients for plants

– Buy vegetable growing soil at agricultural stores, soil that has been treated to eliminate pathogens. You can use alluvial soil, sandy soil… This is the soil used to grow vegetables

– Humus creates soil porosity: coconut dust, smoked rice husks, sawdust,… honeycomb charcoal slag can be used. The looseness of the soil helps vegetables easily absorb nutrients and the roots quickly spread far.

– Organic fertilizer: provides nutrients for vegetables. We can use composted fertilizers from kitchen waste, green manure, manure, chicken manure, decomposed cow manure, vermicompost, microbiological organic fertilizer…

– Biological products Trichoderma Bacillus – Duc Binh: capable of treating soil, increasing soil humus effectively, kills pathogens, fungi, nematodes that damage vegetable roots, protects and stimulates the root system of vegetables to thrive.

– You can use sawdust, smoked rice husks, treated coconut fiber soil… to increase soil humus

3. 3-step process of soil treatment before planting vegetables

To grow vegetables, soil treatment is especially important. Properly treated soil will ensure the best environment for plants to grow and develop. This process includes 3 steps as follows:

Step 1: Loosen the soil, dry it and mix it with lime

After harvesting the previous crop, farmers need to pick up all the remaining old vegetables, weed, loosen the soil and dry in the sun for 3 to 5 days. The purpose of this step is to increase oxygen in the soil while helping to eliminate disease-causing fungi..

After the soil is crushed, people use lime powder to mix it. Lime has the effect of inhibiting fungal growth in soil, adding calcium to plants, minimizing the risk of soil degradation.

Step 2: Make the soil loose

To increase the porosity of the soil, you need to add some decomposed manure to the soil such as: cow manure, chicken manure, rotten straw, smoked rice husk, coconut fiber, bean residue or composted household waste…

Next, we use a plastic bag to cover the soil and dry it in the sun for another 5 to 10 days. This step helps eliminate up to 70% of fungi and pests still hidden in the soil, making the soil more porous and nutritious.

Step 3: Add nutrients to the soil

After a period of cultivation, the soil will become infertile and lacking in nutrients. Therefore, before starting the new planting season, along with soil treatment, farmers must add nutrients to the soil. Currently, there are many different types of fertilizers for you to choose from. However, using decomposed organic fertilizer combined with microbial fertilizer to fertilize the soil is both safe and brings long-term results. According to experts, microbial fertilizers are very benign to the soil, ensuring no negative effects on crops, ecosystem quality and human health.

In particular, treating vegetable soil with vermicompost is extremely good! Vermicompost helps loosen the soil, stimulates plant roots to grow, and increases moisture retention so plants stay lush all year round.
